When fast start-up and supreme reliability really matters, diesel engines have always been the technology of choice. In nuclear power plants, this is no different.
Diesel engines are key components of the generating sets for the safety of a nuclear power plant.
Under the S.E.M.T. Pielstick brand, MAN Energy Solutions has been producing PA and PC diesel engines since 1946. The first 400 mm bore engine was installed in 1951 on a land-based power plant. To date, more than 4400 units of the PC class and more than 10,000 units of the PA class engines have been produced and installed worldwide.
The first S.E.M.T. Pielstick engines for emergency generating sets were commissioned in the sixties in Europe and in the early seventies in the USA. Since then numerous machines have been delivered to various countries (in nuclear power plants) and have accumulated a huge number of starting and loading up sequences as well as running hours, probably providing the S.E.M.T. Pielstick brand with the largest experience in this particular field of use of diesel engines.
MAN’s PC2 and PA6 diesel engines have been certified for nuclear application in countries such as China, France, India, Japan, Korea and USA.
The PC2.6 B N and the PA6 B N have been awarded the nuclear qualification only after stringent testing according to the IEEE 387, RCC-E and KTA standards, involving 100 (or 300) consecutive hot and cold starts. Both the PC2 engine and the PA6 engine can operate under seismic conditions.
